Grand Clay Arts Meeting

The next general membership meeting of Grand Clay Arts will be September 16, 2021, at 9:00 AM.  We welcome participants both in the studio and on Zoom.  Please join us for this first meeting of the Fall/Winter season.

Congratulations to RUTH BELL for developing our new ad format!

Message from the President

Bruce Lucas

Sun City Grand traffic is beginning to increase as returning residents are on the move. We look forward to welcoming friends and members back to the GCA studio for a great Fall 21/Spring 22 season!

The club needs assistance in a few areas:

Hand Building Table and Potters Wheel Reservations

Please take a few minutes in advance of studio visits to go online and simply place your name in a time slot.  The purpose of the reservation system is to share with fellow members the volume of traffic flowing through the studio at any given time.  This courtesy helps ensure members have productive visits to the studio.

2022 Election Committee

VP Pat O'Brien has formed the 2022 Election Committee.  The committee members will be announced during the upcoming Thursday membership meeting.  This written announcement is to notify GCA members interested in running for an elected club office to contact a committee member beginning post Thursday meeting.  As is GCA tradition, an election will be held in December during the general membership meeting.

Great News!

You're invited to a ringside seat to view the Village Center reconstruction project currently underway.  The action is taking place right outside our studio windows!

SCG COVID-19 Guidelines

At this time, the community is functioning without C-19 restrictions in place.  To review, SCG Board follows state, county and CDC guidelines in establishing community policy.  Friday's (9/10/21) COVID-19 community update stated: "As it presently stands, there are no restrictions in place.  While the Board highly recommends masks and social distancing, they currently remain optional.  Proof of vaccination cannot be required by CAM or by individual clubs at this time."

The following name tags are available in the Clay Arts lobby:

Have a great September!

All the best,

Bruce

Artist of the Month

Although Brian is with us only a short time each year, we all look forward to his amazing talent and teaching skills during the months he is in residence.  Last season, Brian undertook a challenge, creating a totem inspired by his love of wildlife and animals upon whom he can apply his taxidermy skills.  Yes, he's a man of many talents!

We acknowledge Brian for his significant contributions to our club.  He is a fixture in the studio while living in Surprise.  We are looking forward to his return.  Meanwhile, take a look at this wonderful creation!

IT Corner

Karen LeMar

Help Wanted!
We have an urgent need for a couple of volunteer opportunities in the IT area:

  • GCA Facebook Administrator
Activities will include accepting requests to join the GCA Facebook Group and moderating member postings.  We will work together to promote the group and make it a fun and interesting forum to share clay works and techniques!  Knowledge of Facebook is a must.

  • Studio Reservation Administrator
This role entails maintaining the studio reservation calendars on a weekly basis.  Knowledge of Google Sheets is helpful, but training will be available.

Notice of Changes to Gallery Policies

As we approach the Fall and Winter months, we will be reverting to the original policies for the Clay Arts Gallery.  These are:
  • Each artist may have up to 5 pieces in the Gallery at any given time.
  • Pieces may remain in the Gallery for 60 days.  Pieces will be rotated off the Gallery when they have been online for more than 60 days.
These policies will go into effect on 10/1/2021.  The Gallery will be updated to remove pieces that have been online for more than 60 days.  Artists will be notified to retrieve their pieces.

Michigan Girls Week

Cindy Swintek

In August Diane Niehof, Carly Shortz and Cyndi Swintek met up at June Campbell's home in Cheboygan, Michigan, for a three-day pottery and glass extravaganza. We did 3 different pit firings, a raku fire along with a wheel demo the Diane way and glass melting the Carly way.
What a fun three days we had. Thanks to Diane and June for all the pottery pieces they made and Carly for the glass.
