Sad Farewell to Jerry Balman

This month’s newsletter is very special. It focuses on a truly wonderful, long-time member of our clay arts family, Jerry Balman. As you may be aware, earlier this week we announced Jerry’s passing. In response to the announcement, please note several of our fellow members' comments and memories of this caring and generous person.

Jerry Balman

The thing that impressed me most about Jerry, is that he was always friendly, and had a smile on his face. Always willing to help anyone in the club when he could. Jerry constantly led our club in creating a tremendous number of bowls, for the Bowls of Hope charity sponsored by WHAM. He will be missed.

Jerry and Pat have been our friends for several years. We have taken care of their sweet little dog Millie many times when theyve gone back to Colorado to visit their daughter. I know this Is going to be hard on many people especially in the pottery club. Im glad they have a son in the Phoenix who Im sure has been there for both of them. Tomorrow Im planning on taking them some homemade potato salad and express my condolences.

So sorry to hear of Jerrys passing. I assume it is the Jerry that we were acquainted with - tall and quite a wheel thrower. He always had a smile and really enjoyed knowing him.

It is always sad to say good-bye forever to those we cherish.

A very sad day.

Our lives will be a little less without Jerrys presence.  He was a very easy person to get to know and like many others in the studio I enjoyed his company, every day I was there for the past 8 years..

So sorry to hear this. I was able to get a card to him while he was still in Del Webb with a hand written note on it. He was a very nice man. He will be missed.

I have to say that I was very saddened to hear of the passing of our wonderful friend Jerry Balman. He had such a rough year this past year and I had hopes that he would recover.  My condolences to his family and close friends. He helped me a lot the last year on the wheel and we had some good chuckles over a few of my disastrous pieces, as he tried to assist in a rescue or two. He taught me a few extra tricks to making lids and making them fit just right. I will miss him for sure.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Between 10 and 15 years ago I just popped into the studio to see what it was like and Jerry was making some cups. He gave me two that he said would be Ready to be picked up in a short while after being glazed and fired. He and his buddy are the ones that got me interested in Clay Arts here in Grand. Though I have not been able to be active lately, the enjoyment I have received knowing the people and creating objects has been immeasurable. For several years when I would say goodbye to Jerry as I headed back to my winter home and I remember him always saying “ the good Lord willing. I feel sure hes with the good Lord now. Thank you Jerry for being you and sharing your talents.

We are leaving town very soon so I look forward to hearing the updates about his service. My sympathy is extended to his family, friends and everyone who was lucky to know him through Clay Arts

Sincerely, Susan Marquardt ... Missouri snowbird, but always a Grand resident at heart!

To All....Take care, and may each of you have happiness, health and / or healing this summer!

Susan and John Marquardt
