It is that busy time of the year and the 2-person rule in the Glaze room is sometimes a burden. We hope that with the renovation being planned we will be able to support a limit of 4 to 6 working in the Glaze room. Well, that is on my Xmas list.
You perhaps have seen the recent e-blast requesting your suggestions/input/ideas for our building renovation. Please take the time to respond to the email or to add to the suggestion box in the studio.
A few procedural items to mention:
Please use the Glaze Room Request Form to provide feedback on glaze performance or shortcomings. The blank forms are on the refrigerator. Fill it out and tape it to the cabinet so we will see it and can act on your concern.
Are you familiar with the use of gum solution in your brush-on glaze? There is a squeeze bottle of gumsol (gum based brushing medium) on the shelf with the stains. This is for you to adjust the brushing characteristics of any glaze. Add a small amount to the glaze in your (yogurt) cup. Mix and test for brush ability. If your cup of glaze is not otherwise contaminated, it may be returned to the source bucket.
Have you seen the new Black stain? (called Sam Hodges black). There is a test tile currently near the stains. Give it a try.
When you leave the room, please look back to ensure that the buckets are covered and that you have left the space looking better than when you arrived.
We are always looking for new glaze team members. If you're interested in learning something new, let's talk.
We continue to evaluate new glaze colors to replace the less popular. Your feedback on what is missing or should be …is appreciated.
A recent review of hundreds of High Fire sheets from October and November tell a story:
➢ 1/3 of you are calling out use of Artist’s glazes and 2/3 Glaze Room glazes.
➢ 10% of the time you do not describe your choice of glaze
➢ Gloss Black, Italian Straw and Antique Jade are the most commonly used.
➢ The newer Dynasty Red, Cinnabar and Speckled Blue Grey are increasingly popular
➢ Ochre is still fairly new to our palette. Give it a try, the test tiles are up now.
➢ Black Silk, Xavier Green and Green Arabia are the least used and likely to be replaced.
Have a great holiday season!
