Clay and Maker Tool Purchases

Effect Monday, July 17, 2023 all cash and check forms of payment will be discontinued for clay and maker tool purchases from the GCA lobby supply cabinet. Charge (or debit) cards will be the exclusive payment method for all clay and maker tools purchases. The updated payment transition method includes both in-stock, and special-order items.

Since the introduction of the Square charge processing system, charge sales escalated to over 95% of all members clay and maker tool purchases. This development, plus increased bank processing fees, has led to the move to charge only.

Gallery Purchases

The clay and maker tools payment policy does not apply to Gallery transactions. At this time, Gallery customer’s may continue to use cash and check currency (along with credit and debit cards) for lobby Gallery art purchases.

State Sales Tax (8.5%) clay and maker tools

On July 6th an email blast was forwarded to all members outlining the separate 8.5% state sales tax addition to clay and maker tools. The tax is now added at the point of purchase. Using clay as an example, 8.5% state sales tax was covered by margin in the past. Margin is the % spread between the price the club pays for clay from the supplier vs the resale price members pay. Given the rapid acceleration in clay and maker tools prices, GCA will no longer cover state tax through margin % spread on membership purchases. Going forward, a separate line addressing tax will be added to all clay and maker tool purchases.

Example:

$20.00 Clay (25 lbs)

$01.70 Tax (8.5% state sales tax)

$21.70 Total Purchase

Below, note a reprint of the July 6th email blast forwarded last week. For those of us that may have missed the email blast, please review its content. Also, please pay special attention to the margin % calculations. The net effect is clearly visible as to why the move to charge state sales tax separately.

REPRINT

7.05.23

Grand Clay Arts Members,

Effective 7.06.23 Arizona state sales tax will be added separately to the purchase price of all clay and supplies sold through the GCA studio.

In the past Arizona sales tax was included in the modest GCA clay and supply margins. Given the dramatic supplier price increases this is no longer an option. Going forward Arizona sales tax will be added to all clay and supply sales at the time of members’ retail purchase.

Cost Data

$18.00…..Average 25 lb bag clay cost to GCA from wholesale supplier

$02.00…..Margin

GCA is holding clay and supply costs to the tightest margins possible. Hopefully prices will hold at current levels for the foreseeable future.

All Arizona taxes collected by the club is forwarded to CAM. This occurs on a monthly/quarterly basis. CAM handles state tax payments to Arizona on behalf of GCA.

Should you have questions, concerning clay pricing or taxes, please feel free to reach out directly by phone or return email.

Best regards,

Bruce Lucas

Phone QR Code = Easy Studio Sign-In

Some of us have QR codes on our CAM cards (new style). QR codes have become common place. I use them to sign into various places here in Grand. It works everywhere they have a scanner: Recreation Centers, Golf Courses and yes at the front desk at the Clay Arts entrance. I keep mine secure on my IPhone in the Apple Wallet with an App called Pass2U. I’m sure Android has an equivalent. I rarely bring my wallet, but like most of us I bring my phone everywhere.

See you around the studio!

Plates of Plenty

Laura Abraham

I know it has been extremely hot in Surprise, so I thought I'd start with a summer joke:

There once was a village whose mayors were all named Benny and had magnificent beards.  Legend held that if a mayor shaved his beard off, an ancient curse would transform him into a piece of pottery.  Centuries passed and every Benny was a fair and wise mayor and never shaved his beard.

But one summer (I think this village was in Arizona), their land was struck by a terrible heat wave.  All the men of the village shaved their beards, but Benny couldn't.  After days and days of sweltering temperatures, Benny could no longer stand it.  He summoned the village barber and had his beard shaved right down to the skin.  The people of the village barely had time to gaze upon their newly-shorn mayor's face before he disappeared in a puff of smoke, transformed into a vase.

And so it was that on that day, the villagers knew the curse was true: a Benny shaved is a Benny urned.

Bahahaha!  I hope you enjoyed that!  I just love a good summer joke!

Anyway...for those of you who are staying in Arizona for the summer, plan on attending the next Plates of Plenty (POP) Pizza Party.  It's an opportunity to socialize with fellow club members, eat pizza and make pottery!  Money raised from selling POP pieces is donated to the West Valley Community Food Bank.
POP Pizza Party
Monday, July 24
5:00 - 8:00 PM
Trish McGinniss and Diane Palley, POP Party Planners, will provide sign-up information soon!

If you can't attend the party, you can still make and donate pieces for POP.  Look for the POP shelf located below the TV screen in the studio.  There you will find instructions and materials.

Stay cool!

Summertime!

Cathy Rick

I'm in southern Wisconsin for the summer, spending quality time with family and friends here.  Our two grandkids are a delight.  Chase (11) is fun to golf with.  Olivia (14) did very well in her national dance competition this month--third place for solo and group took first place.  We leave soon to spend a week in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia for a family vacation.  SO FUN!

I miss playing with clay and hanging with my clay buddies.  I made some spoon rests and brought the bisque pieces with me to underglaze.  I also brought some glazed flowers with me to assemble with stems and leaves.  So I'm not having complete pottery withdrawal.  I've enjoyed following all of the Clay Arts posts on Facebook.

See y'all soon!

Glaze Committee News

Jean Zeidler

Space has always been an issue in the glaze room, as are low usage glazes.
Therefore we are currently migrating the following four lowest usage glazes from 5-gallon dipping buckets to 1-1/2 gallon brush on buckets:
Xavier Green, Arabia Green, Turkish Amber, Forest Green.

We are working toward the following goals:
  1. Continue to migrate low usage glazes from dipping buckets to brush on buckets.
  2. All active dipping buckets to be on the table top. (Move all active glazes off the floor.) This might necessitate dropping some altogether or demoting to brush ons.
  3. Continue to make room for new glazes once determined which ones our members will consume on a regular basis.
Please let us know about new glazes/colors you would like. There’s word that Orange is a candidate.

Rainbow Shave, What's That?

Lynne Shanrock

Connie Johnson has developed a new class for summer fun!  This one only needs a couple of small bisque-fired pieces made from white clay to get you started.  While word hadn't gotten out about how fun this class is in time for the June offering, July class is full and another has been put on the calendar for September.  Maybe Connie can be convinced to add more if there is high demand.

Connie tried it out on her son while he was here for a visit.

Looks like they had a really good time!  Check it out.
