General Membership Meeting

The next general membership meeting of Grand Clay Arts will take place on September 15, 2022, at 9:00 AM in the Hopi Room at Chaparral Center.  We look forward to seeing you as the new season gets underway.

Message from the President

Arizona triple digit temps of August are upon us!  Sun City Grand parking is easy and convenient.  Plus, no lines at the Grand Cafe.

Note that over fifty percent of Sun City Grand's population is year round.  Every week, residents stop by the studio with family and friends to browse the Gallery pottery selection plus inquire about membership opportunities.  So, as you may imagine, monitoring during the summer months is just as important as the balance of the year.

This past week, a first-time monitor, Cecelia Kelly, had an amazing 9am to 12 noon session. Cecelia sold 4 pieces of pottery from the Gallery window to one individual.  The resident, Linda Lewis, just moved to SCG and wished to celebrate with original community artwork.  Cecelia's graphic design background came into play in aiding the resident's selection of the exact pottery pieces to enhance her new home.

Please take a moment to read the review submitted by the resident to Square complimenting Cecelia's assistance.
Also, Cecelia met with resident, Lois Joseph that morning.  Lois stopped by the lobby to inquire about classes.  That evening, Lois joined the club and signed up for the Basic Clay Class.

Congratulations to Cecelia Kelly for a great monitor's shift!

As active GCA members, we all need to take a turn, at least once a calendar year, to monitor a 3-hour shift.  Yes, that includes all board of director members.  Our community has provided a fully equipped, single use studio to enjoy.  We need to support SCG by having at
least a single daily monitor session during the summer months, and two daily monitor sessions the balance of the year.  Please check our calendar and post a monitor's session in celebration of your return to SCG this fall and winter season!

Totem High!
Six-foot-tall bird house totem?
Member Diane Palley, an accomplished multi-media artist, has recently joined GCA.  She really thinks big!  Along with Diane's involvement in the Plates of Plenty (POP) club charity, she has begun a season-long project focused on her very own clay arts bird sanctuary.  Not just any bird sanctuary, but one so grand in scale, it will have its very own Sun City Grand zip code!  We will check in with Diane monthly to update fellow members on the bird house sanctuary totem project.  Figure about six months before the 'for rent' sign is hung inviting neighborhood birds to move in!

Art is in the eye of the beholder...
GCA member Randy Campbell has created the character Boo Boo.  This character has caught on as a fun and unique gift.  Boo Boo comes with its own Certificate of Adoption.  For sure, Boo Boo brings smiles to gift givers and recipients alike.  A very fun gift!

"Old World" clay art meets "New World" technology...
New member Mark Powell is creating his first mug.  Now Mark's challenge is to design the perfect handle to fit his hand.  That's easy if you happen to be an expert in 3D printing.  Note the "white" supports in the photo surrounding the handle mount.  Never know, maybe Mark will lead a workshop in 3D printer to clay technology in the future.
Concerning the kiln room, last week, discussions were held with CAM concerning the finer points of the space.  While development is unfolding at a measured pace, the new kiln room continues to be a go-ahead project.  The construction timetable is in CAM's hands and slowly moving forward.

Have a great month!

Safe Studio Practice

While many options are available when working with clay, Grand Clay Arts limits use of clay bodies to Cone 5 or higher clay.  The only exception to this would be in a supervised class where strict controls can be applied.  Because low fire clay looks the same as higher fired clay, it is possible that a low fire piece could mistakenly be placed in a Cone 5 firing with potentially disastrous results.  Damage to our kilns, kiln shelves, and other members wares would be the likely outcome.  Please make certain if you obtain clay from outside the studio that it is Cone 5 or above.

An additional studio practice requires that pieces be bisque fired prior to glazing thus avoiding the "blow ups" of pieces in a glaze fire which would have a similar bad outcome: damage to kilns, kiln shelves and other members' work.
